Now retired as a professor of English composition and literature, Mr. Norton taught at Compton College in California from 2000 to 2020. Noted for his creative writing, he was designated as a professor emeritus in 2021. During his successful academic career, Mr. Norton also served on various committees, including the educational policy studies committee and the institutional effectiveness committee, and was appointed a senator, secretary, and executive board member of the academic senate.
Mr. Norton led various initiatives during his years in academia, including the common assessment initiative for California Community Colleges. He was also a C-ID representative for California Community Colleges, a curriculum committee representative for both Compton College and El Camino College, participated at numerous professional conferences, and oversaw a successful mentoring program. In addition to his academic involvement, Mr. Norton provided his expertise in creative writing to the film business for several years.
Active in his church as a eucharistic minister for many years, Mr. Norton currently excels as an associate of the Order of the Holy Cross, which is an international Anglican monastic order that follows the Rule of St. Benedict. Throughout his career, he has been affiliated with the New Center for Psychoanalysis, the International Neuropsychoanalysis Association and the Los Angeles County Psychological Association. Mr. Norton has also been a member of the American Association of University Professors, the Academic Senate for California Community College and the Academy of American Poets in retirement.
Mr. Norton pursued a formal education at the University of Iowa, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English. He also obtained a Master of Arts in comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mr. Norton holds a certificate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and is a member of the New Center for Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles.
