SOUTHBURY, CT, April 22, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kris Szabo has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
As a child, Ms. Szabo enjoyed both learning and sports. She was fortunate to have been taught by great teachers, coaches, and mentors that inspired her in becoming an educator herself. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science and dual certification in elementary education and special education from Boston University. During the early years of her career, Ms. Szabo worked as a milieu counselor for Franciscan Children's Hospital, in Brighton, MA, an interrelated resource teacher and fourth-grade teacher at PB Ritch Elementary School, in Georgia, a mathematics and reading tutor, and a special education teacher in Lyme-Old Lyme, CT, and a kindergarten through eighth-grade language arts coordinator for Region 18. While in Region 18 Ms. Szabo designed a developmental reading program for struggling readers in middle school. She wrote the curriculum and coached colleagues on supporting reluctant readers. She quickly learned her biggest influence on teaching and learning would be to work with the adults to impact all the students and not just a single classroom of students.
During her time with Lyme-Old Lyme, Ms. Szabo's principal encouraged her to obtain a certification in administration. This would allow her to have a greater impact on teaching in learning in the school and work to coach and support teachers in the classroom. Upon earning a Master of Arts in reading and language arts from Saint Joseph College and a degree in school administration and supervision from Sacred Heart University, she served in educational administration as the principal of Griswold Elementary School. As an elementary principal, she helped transform the school culture by establishing weekly team meetings, common assessments, and professional learning communities to foster teacher professional development and growth. She even created a Summer Reading Camp called Summer A.I.R. (Adventures in Reading) program to support and develop early literacy skills.
Backed by years of expertise, Ms. Szabo has excelled as the principal of Coleytown Middle School (CMS), in one of the top-performing public school systems in the country, Westport, CT, since 2004. This is the position that she is most proud of as an educational leader. She refers to CMS as her second family; a place where she deeply loves and cares for her students and staff and encourages and supports them to be kind to others and to be their true selves. She starts each year off with a message setting expectations that school is a place to learn and grow from our mistakes and most of all a place to have fun. Ms. Szabo's leadership has created a tight-knit school culture that is student-centered and supports professionalism. Ms. Szabo is said to have high expectations for all and always makes decisions with children first. Her love of teaching and learning is contagious and is modeled in her pursuits in and out of school.
A certified holistic health coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Ms. Szabo has achieved much throughout her career. In 2018 she was awarded the Leadership in Health Coaching Award from IIN. Much of what she has learned at IIN is applicable in her daily work as a school administrator. Even though she has experienced many highlights, she is incredibly proud of raising two, beautiful, well-adjusted children, leading her school community through COVlD-19, and becoming a principal at the age of 28. In the coming years, Ms. Szabo aims to support women through education and mentorship, establish her own business or contract with various health and wellness businesses and teach people how to advocate for themselves. She has recently partnered with HERCollective and The Healthstyle Emporium; two global companies devoted to helping women create healthier, happier lives. She will continue to lead by example and follow her passion for teaching, learning, and being creative as she and her husband spend time writing and recording music together.
