Mr. Berenbeim's serious interest in ethics began with an undergraduate course that he took with Hannah Arendt at Cornell University where he obtained a BA, cum laude and a Keasbey Scholarship to Balliol College, At Oxford, he attended Isaiah Berlin's lectures and read many of his works, graduating with a BA in 1968. Following Oxford, he was admitted to Harvard Law School where he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1971. During the summer of 1969, he was part of the first wave of Nader's Raiders and contributed to the book The Interstate Commerce Omission. As one of the book's authors, he also testified before a Congressional Committee on its findings.
Mr. Berenbeim began his career as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board in Seattle followed by service as Business Representative for the Motion Picture and Television Cameraman's Union. For over a decade (1977-88), he was a Non-Executive Director of Guaranty National Corporation. In 1977, he joined The Conference Board, Inc., an independent economics, management, and public policy research organization where he started and expanded the global reach of the Board's ethics program. While at The Conference Board he served in a variety of research, conference leadership and networking capacities and became a Senior Fellow in 2010.
Mr. Berenbeim joined the faculty of The Stern School of Business Administration at New York University as an Adjunct Professor in 1995. He worked with other faculty members to design a course in Markets Ethics and Law which used concepts from these disciplines as a foundation for the school's current course in Professional Responsibility, currently a degree requirement. As a Fulbright Specialist in Law, he taught Business Ethics at The University of Cergy-Pontoise in France. He has also taught Business Ethics and Anti-Corruption courses at ISCTE in Lisbon (2014) and at IASE in Buenos Aires (2016). In 2019 he taught Business Ethics to graduating High School students in the Prudens Research Institute program for the Arts and Sciences at Donghua University in Shanghai.
He has also served as a co-facilitator for the United Nations Global Compact Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) Anti-Corruption Working Group of business school faculty members and edited and contributed to the publication Anti-Corruption: Implementing Curriculum Change in Management Education (Greenleaf Publishing), 2015. He co-authored Fighting Corruption in East Asia: Solutions from the Private Sector World Bank (2003); Chinese Edition, 2003; Vietnamese Edition, 2004. His 1994 Investor Relations study Les Relations Societies Avec Les Investisseurs Institutionels was published by Revue D'Economie Financiere. He is the author of 55 Conference Board publications and obtained research grants for Conference Board research projects from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the World Bank in 2001 and 2008. In 2010 and 2011 he was chosen as one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders in Trustworthy Business Behavior by Trust Across America.
