Hoyt with inclusion in Who's Who in the World. An accomplished listee, Harry G. Hoyt celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. After serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Hoyt accepted a position with Deere & Company as an engineering analyst with John Deere Harvester Works, a company at which his family members have also been employed. After excelling in this role, he later acted as a systems analyst, foreman, training coordinator and manager of personnel for the company. Mr. Hoyt remained employed with Deere & Company until 1996, having acted as the manager of employee benefits and manager of compensation worldwide prior to changing career paths. Throughout the course of his career, he also owned several small businesses, including apartment and office buildings, a car wash and a gas station. He was also a founder and director of United Saving Association for seven years and president for two of those years.
He become an ordained elder in 1992 and in 1997 Mr. Hoyt volunteered as a member of the Commission on Ministry of the East Iowa Presbytery. This was the beginning of his second career. In 2001, he was appointed as co-moderator for the Commission on Ministry, after which he became a salaried staff consultant in 2003. In this capacity, he was responsible for mediating issues that arose between a pastor and members of the churches in the Presbytery, while striving to maintain the self-esteem and confidence of those involved in the dispute. Additionally, Mr. Hoyt developed and wrote major policy statements for the Presbytery including a complete revision of the compensation system used by its 72 churches and a child protection policy adopted by those churches with children.
Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Hoyt has acted as a board member for various organizations and committees that seek to support his community, including with his local chamber of commerce, the Vera French Community Mental Health Center where he served for a period as secretary, founder and president of the Quint Cities Drug Abuse Council for six years and served on two task forces to advise the governor and legislature regarding drug related legislation. In response to the economic down turn in the late1980s he cochaired, "Quad Cities Vision for the Future" a strategic planning committee of community leaders. During his tenure in religious service, he has also contributed as a member and chair of his church's government and personnel committee. Additionally, Mr. Hoyt chaired a committee responsible for raising over $2 million in funding for major renovations and then directed their installation on behalf of his church, among other roles of leadership to his credit.
Mr. Hoyt is the author of various publications, including a book describing his wife, Gay's battling cancer through a bone marrow transplant titled, "Back from the Brink: A Love Story." He combined two of his hobbies of photography and travel by writing four photographic journals containing approximately a thousand pages of photos and commentary on the people, animals in the wild and scenery of four countries in Africa. On a professional level, Mr. Hoyt developed the First Presbyterian Church of Davenport's operations manual, as well as significant portions of its personnel manual and other policy statements.
Among his career highlights, Mr. Hoyt is most proud to have won several accolades and recognitions, such as various plaques from John Deere, the Council on International Compensation, the Quint Cities Drug Abuse Council and United Way and the Quad Cities Vision for the Future. He is also gratified that for his leadership with the Quint Cities Drug Abuse Council, the gymnasium in the Council's residential center was named after him.
Mr. Hoyt credits his willingness to take risks, build relationships and learn from his own mistakes. Looking toward the future, he aspires to remain an instrumental figure in his own family, particularly with his grandchildren.
This narrative is mostly about his accomplishments in the community during two careers. But he claims much of the credit must go to his wife of 45 years, Gay Hoyt, prior to her death, and to their six children for the substantial love and support they provided him through all of these endeavors.
