Drawing inspiration from the example of various artists, teachers and actors in her family, Dr. Kastor pursued a career in linguistics and the arts. To wit, she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts in 1973. At U.S.C., Dr. Kastor notably co-produced with Judith Walcott a stage play of "Molly Bloom's Soliloquy: From Ulysses," which starred Beatrice Manley, who taught at Cal Arts. Dr. Kastor continues to herald this as one of her greatest career accomplishments.
Dr. Kastor earned a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California prior to accepting a position as an assistant professor at Wichita State University in 1978. She flourished in this role, having been elevated to the role of associate professor in 1987. From 1988 to 1995, she was called upon as the director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at Wichita State University. Bearing a wealth of expertise in language, linguistics, language development, music, theater and visual arts, Dr. Kastor earned the title of professor emerita at Wichita State University in 2016, having taught at the university for several decades.
A respected voice in her field, Dr. Kastor has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and publications, in addition to having edited many publications. She has also contributed to the Journal of Child Language, the Journal of College Reading and Learning and several others. Notably, she has earned much recognition for her work, including having been distinguished as an honorary professor of Albert Schweitzer University, a Hall Fellow of the Hallmark Foundation and a nominee of the Pushcart Prize. Dr. Kastor has received numerous research grants from Wichita State University and has won several writing contests.
To remain aware of advancements in her field, Dr. Kastor has maintained memberships with the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association, the Linguistic Society of America, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Irish-American Cultural Institute and the Union of Concerned Scientists. She has also devoted much of her time toward civic duties, including having acted as the president of the Little Red Wagon Child Care Inc. and the vice president of the Wichita Irish Cultural Association. In the future, Dr. Kastor intends to write a book regarding the relationship between language and the first amendment.
