Well regarded as a professional foster parent, Ms. Gilliard serves on behalf of Jane Addams Hull-House. Working with a small group of foster children every day, she is responsible for overseeing their daily routine, while also influencing them to become productive members of society. Among her many responsibilities, Ms. Gilliard prepares meals, readies them for school, and assists them with their homework. She also ensures that they have constructive activities to attend to after school and, most importantly, provides them with discipline, support, stability and love.
The Jane Addams Hull-House was named after an eponymous child advocate who lived during the 1800s. Established in Chicago, Jane distinguished herself as a pioneer for women's, children's, workers' and immigrant rights. Emerging in communities all over the U.S., the Hull-House closed in 2012 after more than 120 years.
Over the past 25 years, Ms. Gilliard has fostered 38 children, often caring for multiple children at the same time, including siblings. In addition to serving as their full-time caretaker, she would also escort them back and forth to therapy and to weekly visits with their birth mother. Ms. Gilliard continues to keep in touch with many of her former foster children, often celebrating birthdays and holidays together.
Ms. Gillaird notably completed coursework in job development at the Olive-Harvey City Colleges of Chicago. Shortly thereafter, she joined a pilot program so that she could become a professional foster parent. Recognizing her contributions to the field of social services, Ms. Gillaird has been the recipient of numerous awards.
