Drawing inspiration from the example of his father, who was an agricultural and fertilizer chemist, Dr. Andrews pursued a career in chemistry. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Mississippi State University and a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Andrews began his career as an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Virginia in 1966.
Dr. Andrews served in this capacity until 2008, at which point he earned the status of professor emeritus. A respected voice in his field, he has received numerous research grants, including from the American Chemical Society, the United States Air Force, the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. Moreover, he has published close to 900 papers in scientific and professional journals throughout his career. Among his career accomplishments, Dr. Andrews is also proud to have published the first paper about the production and characterization of Dialane in Science, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dr. Andrews is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry, in addition to having served as a fellow in chemical engineering at Mississippi State University. With expertise in molecular structure and spectra and the production of new molecules from metal atom reactions, he has been called upon as the editor of "Chemistry and Physics of Matrix Isolated Species," as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Molecular Structure.
Having garnered much recognition for his inimitable work, Dr. Andrews was presented with the Distinguished Scientist Award from the University of Virginia in 2008. Likewise, he earned the Pimentel Award for his work on matrix isolation spectroscopy, the Hamilton Watch Award for Outstanding Senior in Engineering from Mississippi State University and the Plyler Prize and Lippincott Vibrational Spectroscopy Award from the American Physical Society. Aside from his primary vocational pursuits, Dr. Andrews has acted as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America for nearly a decade, and has coached local little league baseball teams. He attributes much of his success to many of his mentors, especially his research professor Pimentel at the University of California at Berkeley.
