BEAVERTON, OR, May 03, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Arlinda S. Dickson has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Leading a fascinating and multifaceted career throughout numerous professions, Ms. Dickson has earned distinction as an educator, a programmer, an accountant, a health information manager and a customs inspector across the span of her vocational journey. Born in California, she attended San Diego State University, from which she earned a bachelor's degree in linguistics and Spanish, with highest honors, in 1979. During this time, Ms. Dickson earned entry into the honorable societies of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Delta Pi.
Ms. Dickson first entered the workforce as an inspector with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, during which time she was stationed along the U.S.-Mexican border in San Ysidro, California. In this capacity, she was responsible for screening incoming migrants and visitors for potential issues, including the smuggling of illegal drugs. Ms. Dickson subsequently accepted a role in teaching English as a second language at a local high school and, upon observing that most students could not read above the second-grade level, she returned to her collegiate studies to earn both a postgraduate degree in education and certification in bilingual and multicultural learning.
Following the birth of her three children, Ms. Dickson reoriented her priorities toward supporting her family. To this end, she studied ABL programming language in Toronto, Canada, which she leveraged toward the banking industry. She also studied bookkeeping and accounting and worked from home as a freelance accountant as her children came of age. During this time, Ms. Dickson joined the U.S. Navy Reserve and served as a commissioned intelligence officer specializing in terrorism analysis, a position in which she utilized her knowledge of computer coding to help save lives on behalf of the U.S. Department of State and Defense Intelligence Agency.
After her children entered grade school, Ms. Dickson returned to her own pursuits as an educator and taught bilingual sixth grade and later, math in the middle school setting. During this period, she also joined the faculty staff at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she taught student teachers (who were becoming math teachers) through the Masters in Education program. After several years in this capacity, Ms. Dickson relocated to Portland, Oregon, where she attained an Associate of Applied Science in health information and management. Following this accomplishment, she provided her services as a medical record manager for local health centers in Multnomah County, whose patients were largely destitute. A dedicated civic advocate as well, Ms. Dickson is a former board director for a hospital auxiliary organization that provided much-needed services on behalf of three businesses.
Now retired, Ms. Dickson has reoriented much of her time toward the renovation of her home, through which she is gratified to explore her artistic sensibilities. She also volunteers her services as an English as a second language teacher for new students. Looking toward the future, she aspires to serve as a court-appointed special advocate for children who must appear in court but lack family support. Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Dickson is proud to have overcome numerous challenges and upheld the value of her personal motto, "Don't give up."
