She is most proud of launching the Medical Laboratory Science program at the Center of Excellence in Rural Health while at the University of Kentucky.
MORGANTOWN, WV, May 06, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michelle Montgomery Butina, PhD, MLS, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. While serving in the North Carolina National Guard, Dr. Butina pursued a Bachelor of Science in medical technology at Winston-Salem State University. After graduating in 1998, she received a Master of Science in clinical laboratory science from Michigan State University before joining Armstrong State University as an assistant professor. During the last four years of her service with Armstrong State, Dr. Butina also completed a Doctor of Philosophy in workforce education from the University of Georgia's College of Education. Additionally, she earned a certificate in diversity and inclusion from Cornell University in 2021,
Dr. Butina worked as an associate professor and program director for the University of Kentucky's College of Health Sciences between 2010 and 2018. Supported by two decades of industry knowledge, she excels today as the vice chair of laboratory science in the Department of Pathology, Anatomy and Laboratory Medicine at West Virginia University. Since joining the university in 2018, Dr. Butina has secured more than $100,000 in funds to renovate the research laboratory into a student laboratory, expanded upon the University's clinical rotation partnerships by 100 percent for the MLS program, and increased retention efforts of freshman students through communication plan development, networking initiatives and amending admissions criteria.
A medical laboratory scientist through the American Society for Clinical Pathology, Dr. Butina maintains her affiliation with the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science, the Association of Clinical Scientists, the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions and the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Furthermore, she has authored a number of articles that have appeared in Clinical Laboratory Science, a publication of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, of which she is also a member.
In light of her outstanding body of work, Dr. Butina earned a Distinguished Author Award through the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science. While her career has been filled with highlights, she is most proud of launching the Medical Laboratory Science program at the Center of Excellence in Rural Health while at the University of Kentucky. Looking toward the future, Dr. Butina aims to experience continued success in academic executive leadership.
