Dedicated to helping people discover their unique abilities, Dr. Malan has distinguished himself as a successful music composer and educator for more than 25 years. To prepare for his professional journey, he earned a Master of Arts in music composition in 1988 and a Doctor of Music in the same concentration in 2001 from the University of the Witwatersrand. Following the attainment of his master's degree, Dr. Malan served as a lecturer for the university in 1995, where he taught music methodology, music composition and practical music. Following this period, he joined The River Group in 1998 as Music Director. This position transitioned to that of Media Director in 2002. Part of his responsibilities as Media Director includes being the editor for MyFaith Magazine since 2007.
Though Dr. Malan initially worked in music composition and theater, he eventually resolved to switch his focus toward the television broadcasting industry. While living in South Africa, The River Group pioneered a satellite channel and gradually increased the scope of their services to include digital and terrestrial transmissions. Over 20 years, they were able to grow from a small audience to more than 250 million viewers. Part of Dr. Malan's responsibilities and leadership saw the company expand to the United Kingdom and the United States.
In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Malan was honored with multiple national and international composition awards, including a SAMRO Composition Award. He has also been given educational music awards for making a positive difference in the lives of his students. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Malan was involved in Johannesburg with Music Enrichment Workshops (MEWS), a program intended to teach music to underprivileged adults. While under his leadership, the program was recognized by the Four Outstanding Young South Africans group for the work they were performing on behalf of the community.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Malan plans to continue laying the foundation for a successor to take his place in the company. Following this happy occasion, he looks forward to enjoying time spent with his family and future grandchildren.
