For more than 40 years, Dr. Hitchens has been an active pharmacist, consultant pharmacist, clinical pharmacist, medical writer, and editor. Initially graduating from Purdue University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy, she went on to earn her Master of Science in Business Administration from Indiana University in 1982, before returning to Purdue University to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree in 1998. She is board-certified as a geriatric pharmacist by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. Dr. Hitchens is also certified in medication therapy management, immunization, basic life support, and has completed the core and advanced curriculum of The American Medical Writers Association.
Inspired by her father, a family practice physician, Dr. Hitchens' focus has always been in medicine and health. Her father discouraged her from becoming a physician, given the long hours and demands physicians of that era faced. Consequently, Dr. Hitchens enrolled at Purdue University in Prepharmacy--even though at that time most practicing pharmacists were men.
Dr. Hitchens began her career as a Walgreens retail pharmacist in 1977 but always had a strong interest in medical communications. Early in her career, she began writing and publishing articles in pharmacy trade journals, including Drug Topics, Hospital Pharmacist Report and American Druggist. In 1994, she officially started her business Write Rx Medical Communications and Consulting, writing for pharmaceutical companies, clinicians, and publishing firms throughout the United States. She has had 17 cover stories in trade journals and 7 articles approved for pharmacist continuing education as well as numerous other published articles. The Natural Medicine Comprehensive Database, for which she was an author, was praised as 'superb' by the review in the Journal of the American Medical Society, June 14, 2000.
During her career, Dr. Hitchens became extremely interested in medication therapy management. After teaching as an adjunct professor at Butler University in 2005-2006 in Self Care, at graduate level Pharmacology for Nurse Practitioners at the University of Indianapolis, and Pharmacology for Respiratory Therapists at Clarian Health, she returned to pharmacy practice as an outpatient pharmacist at the Roudebush VA Hospital. Desiring to be more involved in medication management, she became a consultant pharmacist for Pharmakon LTC Pharmacy from 2009-2016, and a clinical pharmacist for Wexford Health Sources from 2017-2021, and is currently an active consultant pharmacist for Premier Pharmacy.
As a consultant pharmacist/clinical pharmacist Dr. Hitchens has evaluated and worked to improve drug use in assisted living facilities, long-term care facilities, and Indiana state prisons. Dr. Hitchens' ultimate goal is to improve medication management for the geriatric population in the community. She continues to be an active reviewer for several professional publications and acts as an author's editor for several clinicians.
Dr. Hitchens is a member of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, Indiana Pharmacist Alliance, and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
