An expert in military communications and technology, Mr. Smeltz has been in the technology industry for over 30 years. Prior to his current position, he served honorably in the U.S. Air Force for over 25 years and retired as a Colonel. He served in many positions with distinction, including detachment, squadron, combat Numbered Air Force, Major Command, Air and Joint Staff levels. After graduating from The American School in Switzerland (Greece Campus) in 1986, he earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania in 1991. After he graduated, Mr. Smeltz joined the U.S. Air Force as a team chief for satellite command and control operations support. He became a command and control systems analyst for the 617th Communications Squadron in 1994 and then attained a Master of Arts in computer resource management from Webster University in 1995.
Following this accomplishment, Mr. Smeltz continued his military service as a mission systems and support commander for the 886th communications squadron in 1995. He was selected to be an executive officer for the 86th civil engineering group in 1998 and again in 1999 to the Air Combat Command, Chief of the Directors' Group (ACC/A6) and branch chief of enabling process support. In 2002, he served as an action officer for legislative and budget affairs for the Directorate of Communications at the Pentagon. To further his expertise in his field, he earned a Master of Arts and Science in military operations at Air University in 2005. After attaining this degree, he was selected to be the commander of the 4th communications squadron at Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base. He commanded a squadron 3 additional times and he concluded his career as the AFCENT Director of Communications where he was responsible for all communications, technology and cybersecurity in the CENTCOM area of responsibility.
In 2017, after his military service, Mr. Smeltz became a senior program manager for Peraton. During his tenure, he has been involved in the business development and contract award of $282.2 million in Air Force cyber contracts and led delivery planning for two programs, culminating as the Program Manager for one of those programs. He is responsible for all aspects of program delivery for his program, including hiring and managing the staff and subcontractors, establishing appropriate metrics and leading meetings to track progress and correct issues. He effectively meets or exceeds customer expectations with his dedicated work.
