Ms. Burns was active as a competitive swimmer as a child and even qualified for the Olympic Swimming Team. An expert in sprint freestyle swimming, she was celebrated as a Pan American Gold Medalist in Swimming and has won several swimming medals. Since 2008, Ms. Burns has served as the founding owner and operator of Martha Burns Swimming School of Medina LLC.
When she sadly lost her husband, Ms. Burns found herself in a difficult financial situation and began giving swimming lessons from her home in 1971. Her business garnered success and her son was inspired to become an instructor as well. In 2000, they established the Martha Burns Swimming School of Hopkins, which grew rapidly and later became the Martha Burns Swimming School of Medina LLC.
Ms. Burns considers one of the highlights of her career as the instances in which she taught a student with Down's syndrome how to swim. Passionate about helping others, she has proudly volunteered with the Young Men's Christian Association and the American Red Cross. Likewise, Ms. Burns has been appointed as a County Crusade chairman for the American Cancer Society.
