Supported by years of professional expertise in nursing, research and education, Ms. Shands presently excels as a program manager with the University of Washington's School of Nursing and as a facilitator and contractor for Cancer Lifeline. Additionally, she is the senior research consultant for the University of Washington and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Furthermore, Ms. Shands serves as a research consultant and trainer with the National Cancer Institute, for which she tests the efficacy of the culturally adapted Conexiones Program for Hispanic mothers diagnosed with cancer.
During an earlier stage of her career, Ms. Shands worked as a clinical program manager for Cancer Lifeline, for which she also served as a family consultant and support group manager. Likewise, she functioned as a grief and loss counselor in private practice, a bereavement coordinator for Group Health Cooperative's hospice program and as a home care nurse with Hospice of Northern Virginia. Over the years, Ms. Shands has also gained valuable expertise in the field in various patient care roles for Personal Aides Inc., Bay State Home Care Services Inc., and George Washington University Hospital.
Before embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Shands earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the American University Lucy Webb Hayes School of Nursing in 1977. A decade later, she expanded upon her expertise and received a Master of Nursing from the University of Washington's School of Nursing. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Ms. Shands aligns herself with the Oncology Nursing Society and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
In light of her breadth of knowledge, Ms. Shands has contributed to various articles in professional journals, including "Helping Us Heal: Telephone versus in-person marital communication and support counseling for spouse caregivers of wives with breast cancer" and "Enhancing Connections-Palliative Care: A Quasi-experimental pilot feasibility study of a cancer parenting program." and "Parents with Advanced Cancer: Worries About Their Children's Unspoken Concerns." Throughout her career, she has served as a senior member of a research team that has currently received funds from the National Institutes of Health for a clinical trial that will test the efficacy of a skill-based intervention program to help parents with advanced cancer to support their children.
For her professional achievements, Ms. Shands has won several Leadership Awards, and the Karl & Ellen Zahlis Inspirational Award, Gloria Gutkowski Founders Award and the Barbara Frederick Award for Inspirational Vision and Leadership through Cancer Lifeline. While her career has been filled with highlights, she is most proud to have been part of the early development of hospice care in the United States during the early-1980s, and for the last 30 years, developing and evaluating evidence-based programs to support families living with cancer. Looking ahead, Ms. Shands aims to continue her research and work with Cancer Lifeline.
