To prepare for her career, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in clinical sociology from Ithaca College in 1995 and a Master of Arts in occupational therapy from New York University in 2002. She also attained several certifications to practice lymphatic rehabilitation, oncologic rehabilitation and constraint-induced movement therapy, among other specialties. Ms. Shechter began her professional journey in healthcare as a marketing manager for Oxford Health Plans in 1995 and accepted a leadership position as the director of breast cancer and lymphedema rehabilitation for Madison Avenue Physical Rehabilitation and Wellness in 2002, where she also worked as an occupational therapist.
Since 2013, Ms. Shechter has distinguished herself as the owner, president and director of rehabilitation of her own private company, ShechterCare. An expert in breast cancer and lymphedema rehabilitation, she also oversees the daily operations of her business, including the management of documentation, finances, staff training and hiring and insurance reimbursement. In recognition of her work, she was interviewed by Larry Hand for Reuters and has been featured in several other articles. Ms. Shechter was also named as the Advocate of the Year and received a patient advocate award from the Lymphatic Education and Research Network in 2015.
Ms. Shechter became involved in her profession out of a passion for communicating openly with her patients, rather than focusing on their afflictions as a separate entity. Her goal has always been to find attainable management strategies that suit the individual needs of each person in her care, and help them lead fulfilling lives far into the future.
As part of her dedication to her field, Mrs. Shechter maintains her affiliation with the National Lymphedema Network, the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, MyBCTeam and the National Consortium of Breast Centers, along with other professional organizations. A dedicated civil advocate, she also participates in many nonprofit and charity organizations, including volunteering as a medical advisor for the 5 Under 40 Foundation and with the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Shechter has also contributed her expertise as a guest speaker for Survivor Journeys, Lymphie Strong and the Lymphatic Education and Research Network, among others.
Looking toward the future, Mrs. Shechter plans to pursue and complete a doctorate degree in order to work on breast cancer related lymphedema and rehabilitation. She will also continue to work hard for the sustainability and stability of her clinical practice, creating an inclusive center where other services are offered, such as a 3D tattoo intended to help patients with breast cancer who have had appearance-altering surgeries.
