An expert in reporting on social issues, Mr. McDonald has distinguished himself as a journalist for more than 25 years. To prepare for his career, he earned a Bachelor's of Science from Troy State University in 1995. Since graduating, has written content for a weekly newspaper, daily website and a quarterly magazine serving the LGBT communities in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Notably, Mr. McDonald serves as part of an award-winning team of reporters who have worked diligently to transform a local media outlet from a small bar guide into a credible and trusted daily news source.
Likewise adept in administration for websites and social media, Mr. McDonald has worked with numerous local news outlets, including the Panama City News Herald, the Dothan Eagle, the Troy Messenger and South Florida Gay News. He also maintained involvement as an entertainment contributor for Freedom Communications Florida for five years. As part of his dedication to his field, Mr. McDonald also served on the board of the Florida chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in 2017.
Having long felt an affinity for expressing himself through words, Mr. McDonald was recognized for his commitment to journalism multiple times throughout his career. To wit, he was honored with an Associated Press Award in 1999 for his coverage of the Talladega 500 and Daytona 500, and received awards for his criticism writing in 2005 and 2006. A dedicated civil activist, Mr. McDonald formerly served on the precinct committee for Broward County and was a Democratic candidate for the Florida House of Representatives in 2010. To give back to his community, he volunteers with the Friendly House, Meals on Wheels and serves as a volunteer ambassador for the Portland Bureau of Transportation.
Mr. McDonald found journalism to be a natural career path to exercise his talent for writing and witticism. Over the span of his professional journey, he is most proud to have been supported along the way by the gay community. Having experienced success through adversity, Mr. McDonald published a memoir of his life, titled "Slice of Good Ol Boy Life," in March of 2022.
