An expert in music, art and writing, Ms. Starrette has served as a jeweler, artist, and teacher for more than 30 years. Well-qualified in the craft of making jewelry, she attained certification in diamond appraisal, colored stone identification and appraisal, and as a gemologist by the Gemological Institute of America. Ms. Starrette also completed apprenticeships in both silver and goldsmithing to gain the necessary experience for her profession.
Ms. Starrette began her creative career as a freelance fiber artist and jeweler in 1967. Between 1975 and 1984, she worked as the owner of The Golden Scarab, a jewelry store. Following this period, Ms. Starrette joined the staff at Sanders Inc. as an advertising manager in 1985, after which she transitioned to her work as a freelance advertising writer in 1986.
To prepare for her new career path, Ms. Starrette earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Marist College in 1983 and a Master of Arts in creative writing, creative process and process teaching at the Vermont College of Norwich University in 1988. Following this accomplishment, she became a part-time teacher of English composition and literature at Madonna College in 1988. During this time, she worked as a manager for Ameritech. Since 1996, Ms. Starrette returned to her creative career as a freelance fiber and mixed media artist, specializing in fabric collage and hooking. Additionally, she has sung with Don Large on the Make Way for Youth Chorus for WJR Radio in Detroit for three years, and Rackham Symphony Choir, enjoying a singing tour of Spain in the mid 1990's.
A naturally determined person, Ms. Starrette has been honored with multiple awards for her work in all her successful professions. Prior to pursuing her education, she received an award for writing direct mail by the Direct Mail Association of Detroit. Ms. Starrette received a Most Valuable Performer Award in 1995 and a President's Award in 1990. She is a former member of the Detroit Women's Economic Club and Detroit Women Writers. She was inducted into Who's Who Worldwide in 1994-95.
Looking toward the future, Ms. Starrette plans to continue making and showing her fiber and mixed media artwork. She also wants to serve as a role model for women in any profession, showing that women are capable of pursuing their dreams despite any challenges or obstacles.
