She subsequently attained a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Regent University in 2019. Ms. Barnes began her career as an educator for Norfolk Public Schools in 2001, after which she switched to her current role at Little Creek Elementary School in 2015.

She also works with the Family Engagement Specialist to ensure that students have what they need; including backpacks, food, transportation, and other essential resources. As part of her dedication to her field, Ms. Barnes is a member of the National Education Association and the Virginia School Counselor Association.
Likewise dedicated to her community as a civil advocate, Ms. Barnes' school has partnered with a local church, through which parents can shop for Christmas presents for their children at a discounted price. She also volunteers her time to crafting self-care packages for the local homeless population, and provides Christmas and Thanksgiving packages for those who are in need during the holiday seasons.
Having drawn inspiration from her parents to pursue higher education, Ms. Barnes credits her success to their support and to her Christian faith. Looking toward the future, she plans to continue working with children, either in an administrative role or continuing her career as a school counselor. Ultimately, Ms. Barnes' goal is to help her students achieve success and prosperity as they come of age.
