Having come of age in a family of engineers, Dr. Vanderwalker has long harbored an interest in science. She obtained a Bachelor of Science from Boston College, and later studied materials science, transmission electron microscopy of precipitation on dislocation arrays. In 1981, Dr. Vanderwalker earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Upon earning her doctorate, Dr. Vanderwalker completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Oxford in England. Thereafter, she was recruited to serve as an assistant professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In this role, she conducted extensive research in her field, and for her accomplishments, was presented with the first-year faculty Research Award from Stony Brook University. This research was featured in various publications, all of which Dr. Vanderwalker considers her proudest achievements. Additionally, she has contributed a wealth of articles to several relevant scientific journals.
Prior to her retirement in 1994, Dr. Vanderwalker served as a materials research engineer for the United States Army Materials Technology Laboratory for nearly a decade. To remain aware of developments in the field, she is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences. A trusted voice in her discipline, she is most proud to have been invited to speak before the American Ceramic Society, where she expounded upon her studies on titanium diboride.
