Although his father was an attorney, Mr. Sweeny was convinced by his father that dentistry was the "ideal profession". However, after entering college with a major in pre-dental studies he soon realized that his real calling was to the legal profession. He recognized the gratification of being able to help others with their legal issues and decided to follow in his father's footsteps. Mr. Sweeny obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from St. John's University School of Law in 1973.
Upon graduating from law school he anticipated that he would immediately join his father's law office but was convinced by his father that before joining in private practice he should gain some trial experience as an assistant district attorney. He thereupon entered the Nassau County District Attorney's Office in 1973 where he served in the District Court, the County Court and the DA's Rackets Bureau for five years. In 1978, after handling a number of major investigations and trials, he was recruited to join the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office where he was assigned to the County Court Trial Bureau as a principal trial attorney. Soon thereafter he was assigned to the Major Offense Bureau/Homicide Bureau where he handled many trials involving high profile cases. He served with the Suffolk D.A. until about 1984 when Mr. Sweeny then was recruited by the Suffolk County Attorney's Office to handle the County's civil trial work as a deputy chief of the county's Tort Litigation Bureau.
In 1986, Mr. Sweeny's father advised him that he felt his son had gained more than enough trial experience over the last 12 years and that it was time for him to make a decision about joining his father's office as a partner in the private practice of law. Since 1986, Mr. Sweeny has found success as the owner of his eponymous firm, Sweeny and Sweeny and has excelled in his career as an attorney.
A respected voice in his field, he has maintained his affiliation with the New York State Bar Association, the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the Nassau County Bar Association throughout his career. Mr. Sweeny has also contributed pro bono work for members of his community and local church and those in need. He has over the years been active in his local community associations, as an officer and member. In 2003 he was presented with the John Newman award.
