An accomplished listee, Dr. Mantel celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Dr. Mantel enjoyed an extensive and varied career in higher academia that spanned more than five decades, having retired from her profession as an associate research professor at Portland State University (PSU) in 2018. She previously worked in positions of leadership for a number of institutions, including as the assistant vice president of technology services at the University of Portland, the vice president of academic administration at Willamette University, the dean of faculty at Reed College and the chairperson of the biology department at the City College of New York. Prior to her service in leadership, Dr. Mantel distinguished herself as a professor and assistant provost of research and graduate studies at the City College of New York and a visiting professor at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. She also functioned as a fellow of the MRC Laboratory of Insect Physiology in Cambridge, England, a faculty member at the Marine Biological Laboratory and a research associate with the American Museum of Natural History.

With a particular focus on the subject of marine biology, Dr. Mantel has served her field as a contributor of numerous articles to professional journals and delivered presentations on topics in physiology and on the topic of women in science. Likewise, she has served as a book reviewer on behalf of her colleagues, written chapters that have appeared in scientific texts and penned several abstracts. In addition, Dr. Mantel developed, contributed to and edited Kaleidoscope, the research magazine of the City College of New York, between 1983 and 1998 and served on the editorial board of Physiological Zoology, a scientific journal, from 1991 to 1994. She also co-edited "The Biology of Crustacea" from 1983-1985 and co-authored "The Balance of Living" in 1971.

In addition to her primary responsibilities in the field, Dr. Mantel was active with a number of science-related organizations, including as the executive director of the Intel Northwest Science Expo System, the director of the undergraduate program in biological sciences for the City College of New York and the chairperson of the Dioxin Advisory Panel with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Likewise, among many other roles, she has served for several years as a program and curriculum consultant on behalf of scientific and academic institutions. Dr. Mantel has also been a member of such professional groups as the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Association for Women in Science (AWIS), the Crustacean Society, Sigma Xi, and Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, among others.

Known also for her contributions as a civically engaged citizen, Dr. Mantel presently serves on the charter review committee of the Portland Downtown Neighborhood Association, the chairperson of the advisory council for the PSU Senior Adult Learning Center, and the development chairperson of the League of Women Voters of Portland. She is also a member of the board of directors for the Columbia-Willamette chapter of the scientific research honor society of Sigma Xi, for which she previously served 10 years as president. Other commitments include Dr. Mantel's work as a higher education and community liaison for the Pacific Northwest Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) from 2009 to 2019, a board director for the Downtown Neighborhood Association from 2005 to 2010 and the president of the board of directors at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland between 2004 and 2008.

For her accomplishments in science and academia, Dr. Mantel has received several accolades. Among them, she was bestowed with the Evan Ferguson Award for Service to Sigma Xi and a Legacy Award from LSAMP in 2019, as well as a Faculty Service Award from the Alumni Association of the City College of New York in 1992 and an Outstanding Woman Scientist Award from the New York Metropolitan Chapter of AWIS in 1988. Furthermore, Dr. Mantel was recognized as a fellow of multiple organizations, including Sigma Xi in 2022, AWIS in 2002, AAAS in 1984 and the New York Academy of Sciences in 1980.

Dr. Mantel began her academic studies at Swarthmore College, where she attained a Bachelor of Arts in 1960, and later a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois in 1962 and 1965. Throughout her career, she was often a trailblazer for other women, encouraging them to try experiences they had not previously considered. She initially became involved in her profession out of a deep curiosity regarding the workings of the world, a quality that found encouragement and support from her parents, to whom she credits much of her success. Dr. Mantel has cultivated an open-minded and adventurous nature, which led her to adopting the motto of "say yes and worry later." Looking toward the future, she hopes to continue participating in both her profession and local community.
