Dr. Wright was named as the deputy commissioner for the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services in Philadelphia in 2021. As part of the City's Office of Health and Human Services, he oversees all behavioral and justice-related services, initiatives and resources across all departments, units and divisions. He also works closely with justice and community partners to ensure that necessary resources are available to those residing in the city. Moreover, Dr. Wright works diligently to make sure that his staff has the resources they need to do their jobs efficiently. Receiving local, state, and federal financial support to ensure these resources are ongoing, he notes that these funds support those with behavioral health challenges, as well as those returning to society after being incarcerated or held in psychiatric hospitals.
Prior to being named to his current role, Dr. Wright joined the department as the director of behavioral health and justice-related services in 2013, where he continues to make an impact. In this capacity, he focuses on preventing people that are in recovery from incarceration and hospitalization by providing treatment alternatives. Among other objectives, Dr. Wright oversees policy, planning and the development of treatments services and resources for people that have been diagnosed with a severe mental illness or co-occurring disorder.
Having distinguished himself as a leader in the field since 2001, Dr. Wright serves as an expert in severe mental illness, substance abuse, dependence and co-occurring disorders, as well as clinical and forensic psychology. He also bears extensive knowledge of the behavioral health system regarding the legal system. In addition to his work at the Department, Dr. Wright established his own consulting company, Mental Health Success Boost, which strives to support those in need of resources and support.
As an extension of his work, Dr. Wright is also a respected educator. An adjunct professor at Temple University in Philadelphia since 2011, he teaches courses on psychology and law, as well as developmental and clinical psychology, to undergraduate students and a multicultural psychology course to graduate students. He also provides clinical supervision to doctoral-level clinicians in training. Dr. Wright formerly taught courses as an adjunct professor at Sinclair College in 1999 and 2001 and at Wilberforce University from 1998 to 1999.
In 2015, Dr. Wright published his first book, titled "Find Strength in Your Struggle: Discover the Miracle in You." He has also contributed a multitude of scholarly articles and news articles, and has hosted, facilitated and participated in hundreds of professional workshops and seminars.
Well regarded for his civic accomplishments, Dr. Wright has served as the board chair of Fathers and Children Together, and maintained involvement in the same capacity for Helping Our Families. He has also been affiliated with several other nonprofits, including Comprehensive Community Forgiveness and Restoration, Fathers and Children Together (FACT), and New Options More Opportunities (NOMO). As a commitment to his profession, Dr. Wright is a member of the American Psychology-Law Society, Division 41 of the American Psychological Association, as well as the Association for Psychological Science and the Society for the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality (APA Division 36).
Dr. Wright obtained a Bachelor of Arts at The Ohio State University in 1994 and a Doctor of Psychology in clinical and forensic psychology at Wright State University in 1998. Well qualified in his field, he is licensed as a clinical psychologist in Pennsylvania, a clinical psychologist in Ohio, and a mental health first aid instructor.
Among his career highlights, Dr. Wright is particularly proud to have worked to address cultural differences and the importance of community building, which is integral to the betterment of society. Crediting his upbringing to his confidence in pursuing his goals, he learned the importance of public service from his father, his greatest mentor. Honoring his achievements, Dr. Wright was the recipient of a NOMO Award in 2018. He previously received a Comprehensive Community Healing Award in 2016, as well as numerous other awards for his publications, academics and philanthropic endeavors.
