Prior to embarking on his professional journey, he pursued an education at Mount San Antonio College, where he obtained an Associate of Science in 1977. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Bachelor of Science in respiratory therapy and pre-medicine from Loma Linda University in 1979. He continued his academic efforts at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, attaining a Doctor of Osteopathy in 1984.
As a commitment to his field, Dr. Cohen is licensed to practice medicine in the state of California, has been board certified in emergency medicine and is a certified hospice medical director. Additionally, he has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the American Osteopathic Association, the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California, the American Association of Physician Specialists, the American Medical Directors Association for Long Term Care and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
In 1984, Dr. Cohen began his career in the United States Army in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he completed his medical training and residency (to include acute trauma and life support for the islands of Hawaii), before advancing to the post of an active duty physician from 1986 to 1990. Following his military service, he continued his profession in medicine as a staff physician and an assistant medical director dedicated to the practice of emergency medicine at such institutions as the Hillside Hospital in California, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, Corona Regional Medical Center and the Chapman Medical Center, among others, between 1990 and 1996.
From 1995 until 2021, Dr. Cohen built a prolific career serving as a physician and a medical director of hospice and long term care medicine at various organizations, including the College Hospital, the Lake Forest Nursing Center, the Senior Care Medical Associates Inc., VITAS Healthcare Inc., Family Hospice Care, and current medical director at Bridge Hospice and Palliative Care in Palm Springs, CA, to only name a few. Since 2021, he has found much success as a doctor and a certified hospice medical director at Howard Cohen Medical Corp. of Bridge Hospice. Well regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. Cohen has received multiple awards, including the Medical Director of the Year Awards in 2003 and 2011, the Hospice Physician of the Year Awards in 2006 and 2010 from VITAS Hospice, the Senior Care Humanitarian Award for Outstand Physician in Hospital or Skilled Nursing Facility in 2011, the Osler Physician of the Year Award in 2011 and the VITAS Team Physician of the Year Award in 2011.
In his career related endeavors, Dr. Cohen has contributed to numerous medical community outreach events as a speaker and a program moderator. Outside of his main vocational path, he serves as a television, stage-play and onscreen commercials actor.
Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud to have trained medical students and young physicians in internal medicine and family practices, who consequently attained fellowships and became talented hospice health care physicians. He attributes much of his success to the expertise that he has garnered with all of his specialties throughout his profession, and to his acting background, which has been useful when practicing hospice care. Looking toward the future, Dr. Cohen aspires to teach and mentor the next generation of professionals in hospice medicine by creating a strong residency, fellowship and training program in medical schools, and hopes to continue working in the hospice health care industry.
