An expert in treating patients with liver diseases, Dr. Roytman has been a dedicated professor and physician for more than 20 years. Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1996 and a Doctor of Medicine from Oregon Health & Science University in 2000. Following her graduation, she became a resident physician and underwent an Internal medicine Residency training at Mount Sinai Hospital 2000-2003. During her residency, she was honored with a Physician's Recognition Award in Continuing Medical Education by the American Medical Association in 2003. That year, she started a position as a hospitalist for the Queen's Medical Center and was honored with an outstanding teaching hospitalist award in 2011. She completed a Medical Education fellowship at the John A. Burns School of Medicine in 2012.
Dr. Roytman began working at the Queen's Liver Center in 2012 and was promoted to the Liver Center Program Director in 2016. From 2015 to 2017, she was a Clinical Associate Professor for the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. Since 2017, she has been a Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California San Francisco and the Director of the Liver Program at the UCSF, Fresno campus. In this capacity, she teaches and mentors medical students, residents, fellows as well as advanced practice providers, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants. She conducts research on liver diseases, with the current focus on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as well as the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on alcohol-related liver disease while caring for patients with a wide variety of liver-related conditions. She was nominated for the 2019 Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching for her distinction as an educator by the University of California San Francisco, Fresno campus. To remain aware of developments affecting her field, she is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and was admitted as a fellow to the American College of Physicians.
Throughout her career, Dr. Roytman has presented her research at multiple professional conferences and published numerous papers, earning recognition for her expertise. One of her most impressive professional achievements was recognizing the link between outbreak of severe liver injury and an herbal dietary supplement in 2013 ultimately leading removal of this supplement from the market. Currently, Dr. Roytman is focusing on the deleterious effects of COVID-19 pandemic on alcohol-related liver disease and had recently published a paper on the subject in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Roytman plans to continue excel in her field. The California Central Valley area is experiencing a shortage of physicians and she plans not only to provide much needed care for patients with liver disease herself, but also to train and mentor future physicians. She also intends to continue contributing to research hoping to find a solution for a growing problem with fatty liver disease and alcohol-related liver disease. Additionally, she would like to give back to her community through providing education on the importance of health management.
