An expert in music education, Mr. Sywassink distinguished himself as a dedicated music teacher for more than 30 years. To prepare for his career, he earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Arizona in 1977 and a Master of Music degree from Arizona State University in 1985. Well qualified in his profession, he has a Kodály music teaching certificate from the University of Hartford and Orff Schulwerk certification from the University of Arizona. He began his career as a junior high school music teacher for two years and then became a music teacher for elementary school students, a role in which he excelled for more than three decades before his retirement. As part of his dedication to his field, Mr. Sywassink maintained his affiliation with several professional organizations, including the Arizona Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. He was a founding member of the Arizona Kodály Teachers Society. Presently, he remains active with the American Guild of Organists, the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and the Hymn Society.
Throughout his career, Mr. Sywassink has been honored multiple times for his dual expertise in teaching and music. To wit, he was given an Excellence in Teaching Music Award by the Arizona Music Educators Association in 1989 and an Excellence in Performance and Teaching Award from the University of Arizona School of Music in 1995. Mr. Sywassink credits his success to the mentors he had along the way in his education and career, as well as the opportunities he had to collaborate with educators from many different schools and organizations.
Despite having retired from teaching, Mr. Sywassink still exercises his love for music by serving as a church organist, and has directed church choirs of all ages. Additionally, he sings with the Sonoran Desert Chorale and serves as a member of their board. Looking toward the future, Mr. Sywassink plans to continue performing in this capacity, sharing his love for music with his community and his faith.
