Mrs. Smith serves as a staff nurse in the neuroscience unit at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina. Specializing in caring for patients with brain and spinal surgeries, she and her team also care for those suffering from neurological issues, such as seizures and autoimmune diseases. Overseeing a staff of eight other nurses, Mrs. Smith helps with the scheduling of each new 12-hour shift and is responsible for screening patients and performing other routine duties. Additionally, she has been active as the head of quality for the unit. Mrs. Smith has also been a member of the Unit Based Counsel for the past five years, which is responsible for examining what functions the hospital could improve upon and, if there is a trending problem, works with her colleagues to find adequate solutions.
Aligned with Vidant Medical Center her entire career, Mrs. Smith initially completed her clinical studies during her senior year of nursing school. After graduating, she was immediately hired as a staff nurse and continually progressed to become a charge nurse. Notably, the Center is a nonprofit system comprised of approximately 12,000 employees, can accommodate up to 1,500 patients, and serves 1.4 million people annually.
Attributing her success in nursing to her positive attitude and perseverance, Mrs. Smith is most proud to have exhibited the importance of maintaining compassion. Deeply involved in charitable work, she is active with a Christian organization, AIM, alongside her brother. Dedicated to national and international short-term and long-term mission trips, AIM supports various churches, orphanages and other charitable settings.
Inspired to study nursing by her mother, Tina Scott, a family nurse practitioner, Mrs. Smith obtained an Associate of Science in nursing at Pitt Community College in 2012. She is presently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at East Carolina University in Greenville and is considering working toward a master's degree in the field sometime in the future. Well qualified in her field, Mrs. Smith is board certified in medical-surgical nursing, emergency neurological life support and advanced cardiac life support.
To support her professional endeavors, Mrs. Smith is a prominent member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In 2020, she was recognized as one of the North Carolina Great 100 Nurses by Vidant Medical Center. Nominated by her management team, Mrs. Smith also received a plaque at its virtual gala. She and her unit previously received a Beacon Award from the AACN in 2018.
