Long committed to serving students who live with disabilities and special needs, Eugenia Rigby has served as an educator for over 35 years. To prepare for her work in the field, she earned a Bachelor of Science from Florida State University in 1976 and specialist certification in learning disabilities from Nova University. Following this accomplishment Eugenia attained a Master of Social Work from Barry University followed by a Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling from St. Thomas University.
Eugenia embarked upon her career as a special education teacher, a position she held for nearly 20 years at her beloved Edison Park Elementary School located in Miami Florida. After earning her MSW, Eugenia transitioned into the position of school counselor for five years before moving to Massachusetts bringing with her the understanding that social emotional supports provide students with the opportunity to have a more positive school experience.
In her current position a School Adjustment Counselor for the Southwick School District, Eugenia has developed, coordinated and implemented a multi- tiered comprehensive counseling program for Granville and Woodland Elementary Schools. In this role she works with children through a social emotional learning curriculum which strives to promote pro-social skills, character development, behavior management and responsible citizenship. She collaborates with teachers, school staff, administrators, families and community agencies to provide appropriate supports services to her children and the school community. Eugenia also serves as an Onsite Supervisor for Westfield State University, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
Throughout the span of her tenure, Eugenia Rigby has received several awards for her expertise in the field. She has been admitted to the National Social Work Honor Society and the National Guidance Counselor Honor Society, Dade County School Counselor of the Year nominee and awarded the prestigious honor of NASW Student Social Worker of the Year for Dade County. As part of her dedication to her profession she is an active member of the Massachusetts American School Counselors Association, served as Legislative Chairperson of the Dade County executive board of National Association of Social Workers, an executive board member of the Westmorland YWCA and member of Granville Library Association. Eugenia was recently honored at the Dade County Backpacks for Kids Program as a prestigious teacher alumni of Edison Park Elementary School by Mayor Jordan Leonard. Eugenia has published an article in the National Elementary School Guidance Counselors Journal, "Welcome to Our School Community" 1997.
