Presently, Ms. Coonen serves as a treatment specialist at the Drug Abuse Correctional Center at the Department of Corrections State of Wisconsin. In this capacity, she assists individuals who are suffering from drug and alcohol abuse issues. Since 2017, Ms. Coonen has also worked as a career development advisor at ADVOCAP.
Raised by a single mother on state assistance, Ms. Coonen struggled with impoverishment and worked various jobs throughout the early stages of her career, including as a teller, call center agent, grocery store cashier and a data entry specialist. After taking a leave of absence from college, she returned to her studies to earn her degree. Working part-time jobs to help her daughter attend Fox Valley Technical College, Ms. Coonen learned about the Community Action Program Services in Appleton, which provided education and financial assistance toward a degree at Fox Valley Technical College. During the winter term of 2012, Ms. Coonen returned with a strong commitment to completing her degree. Despite the challenges of working and attending school while managing a bicycle injury, she persevered. Ms. Coonen's journey as a clinical substance abuse counselor began with the completion of an Associate of Human Services in 2014.
Ms. Coonen credits CAP Services with helping her attain an understanding of herself, her value and her ability to improve her personal situation. To commemorate her assiduous nature and ability to prevail despite adversity, the annual Poverty Matters Conference bestowed with her with a Courage Award. Additionally, Ms. Coonen obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science in human services leadership from the University of Wisconsin in 2017.
Among her career highlights, Ms. Coonen is most proud of her work as a treatment specialist, through which she finds immense fulfillment in helping others improve their situation and recognize their inherent value. In accounting for her success in the field, she credits her commitment to a healthy lifestyle and the ability to remain diligent despite various challenges. Looking toward the future, Ms. Coonen seeks to learn how to play the piano.
