Dr. Miller has accrued over 30 years of inimitable experience working for public and private universities, as well as a land-grant university. Having come of age in a family of educators, he intended to choose a different route, and gained professional experience in business and marketing. Thereafter, with a desire to teach others what he had learned, Dr. Miller obtained a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Arizona, from which he also earned a doctoral degree in education.
During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Miller served as a professor and director of the Master of Business Administration program at Fairleigh Dickinson University. After working as an associate dean at the College of Business Administration at Quinnipiac College, he was recruited to serve as the dean of Niagara University's College of Business Administration in 1994. He accomplished much in this role, including having helped the university achieve a business school accreditation that, at the time, was a feat relatively few business schools were able to attain. Dr. Miller now holds the title of trustee emeritus for Niagara University.
A trusted voice in his field, Dr. Miller was hired to act as the president of Lock Haven University in 2004. During this time, Lock Haven University had the largest per capita number of international students at a public university in Pennsylvania. These challenges allowed Dr. Miller to further develop his skills in leadership, team development and strategic planning. Now president emeritus of Lock Haven University, he later accepted a position as the president of Virginia State University in 2010, for which he currently works as a professor. Additionally, he provides services as a consultant for various universities through the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Aside from having conducted a myriad of lectures and written numerous publications, Dr. Miller has contributed extensive time towards charitable and civic pursuits. To wit, he has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis International, led The Seven Hills Middle School for Boys and led the Virginia Council of College and University Presidents, an association designed to support higher education institutions. Moreover, he has served as a member of the United Nations Commission for Peace and Conflict and the International Association of University Presidents. As a testament to his outstanding success and contributions, he has been lauded with the Virginia Governor's Innovation Award, the Crisis Communication Award from the Council for Advancement and Supportive Education, the Community Impact Award from the American Heart Association, induction into the Virginia State University Athletics Wall of Fame and received an honorary doctoral degree from Niagara University. Further, Dr. Miller was once named entrepreneur of the year, and his staff received nine Emmy awards from the American Academy of the Arts, among other accolades throughout his career.
