Having accrued more than four decades of service with Oakland University Athletics in Rochester, Michigan, Mr. Hovland began coaching the Golden Grizzlies' swimming and diving teams in 1979. During the course of his service with the Division II university, he successfully led the men's team to win the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship in his first year, followed by 43 consecutive conference championships, four additional NCAA championships, 54 individual championships and 38 relay national championships. Resigning from overseeing the women's team as head coach for just two years, Mr. Hovland later returned in 2001. During those 22 seasons, he led the team to win 27 consecutive conference titles and a record of 152-76-3.
Coaching over 1,000 student-athletes over the past four decades, Mr. Hovland has retained a deep passion for his work. In 2022, both the men's and women's teams won the Horizon League Championships for the ninth straight time. A 12-school collegiate athletic conference, it is headquartered in Indianapolis and serves the Great Lakes region.
In addition to his successful tenure at Oakland University, Mr. Hovland owns and operates an intense competitive swim camp for boys and girls ages eight to 18. The camp focuses on teaching and improving swimming skills and includes lecturing hours, film study and other forms of instruction. He is also the c-owner and president of P2H2 Liquid Data, Inc. His patented Timing Device is now being used worldwide.
Coming of age on the west coast, Mr. Hovland became active in watersports during the summer months through the San Jose YMCA and Santa Clara Swim Club. After graduating from high school, he was recruited by California State University-Chico, where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in physical education in 1977. Shortly thereafter, he completed a Master of Arts in physical education, teaching and coaching, with honors, at the University of Northern Iowa in 1979. During the course of his college experience, Mr. Hovland competed on four NCAA championship teams and distinguished himself as both a 23-time All-American champion, a 13-time national champion, NCAA Record Holder and the Far Western Conference Athlete of the Year (1976).
Honoring his hard work and dedication, Mr. Hovland has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, Chico State University Hall of Honor and the Oakland University Hall of Honor, the Summit League Hall of Fame and the City of Chico Hall of Fame. He was also named as the Conference Coach of the Year on 29 occasions.
