A leader in mental health for more than 50 years, Dr. Wachtel has served as a forensic social worker with the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in Brooklyn, New York, since 2004. Treating patients that have been sent to his facility after committing serious crimes, these patients receive treatment instead of prison sentences with the expectation that they can be rehabilitated and released back into the community. In addition to leading various group and individual therapy sessions at the center, Dr. Wachtel is responsible for documenting his sessions by providing clinical summaries, educating his patients about the forensic process and assisting them in achieving graduate privileges.
Dr. Wachtel has notably been affiliated with the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center since 1972. Hired as a psychiatric social worker, he spent nearly 20 years in his position. Dr. Wachtel subsequently spent over a decade as a team leader before returning to his original title as a forensic social worker in 2004.
Motivated by his desire to make a difference in the world, Dr. Wachtel believes that he did not choose social work, but that social work chose him. A very rewarding profession, he has rehabilitated hundreds of patients and has played an instrumental role in their lives, as well as the lives of their loved ones. Among his most significant accomplishments, Dr. Wachtel was instrumental in elevating the standards of quality at the facility by establishing planned activities, resulting in an increased discharge rate of approximately 35 percent.
Aside from his professional endeavors in mental health, Dr. Wachtel has become a published author. He has notably published seven books of poetry, including "Sandlot Poet" in 2021 and "First Rose of Winter" in 2017. Dr. Wachtel has also published five children's books, including "The Color Caper" in 2021, "Brains and Beauty" in 2019 and "The Boy Who Lost His Smile" in 2016.
Known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Dr. Wachtel has been volunteering his time in the New York City public schools teaching reading fundamentals to first- and second-grade students since 2004. During his college years, he established and oversaw a local group of students that frequented local public schools and initiated various educational programs to support the teachers. Dr. Wachtel also served as an organizer for Washington Heights Community Services, a community based program.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Wachtel received a Bachelor of Arts at Yeshiva University in 1970, followed by a Master of Social Work at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in 1972. To further his expertise, Dr. Wachtel achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in nutritional science at Central Michigan University in 2011 and a Doctor of Philosophy in social work at Michigan State University in 2022. He is a licensed certified social worker in the state of New York.
To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. Wachtel was recognized with a Martin Luther King Junior Humanitarian/Brotherhood Award for his contributions to society in 1993. Looking toward the future, he aims to continue volunteering his time by working with children at various schools, helping them learn how to read.
