Reflecting on his accomplishments, Dr. Thorman is most proud to have taught geologists of all ages and backgrounds. Responsible for drilling the first well that discovered the biggest onshore, post-World War II oil field in California, his grandfather's contributions were highlighted in a 1949 edition of The Saturday Evening Post. After graduating from high school, Dr. Thorman attended the University of Redlands, where he acquired a Bachelor of Science in geology cum laude in 1958. He received a Master of Science in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962, both in geology, from the University of Washington.
