As a commitment to her field, she obtained certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the National Society of Histotechnology as a histologic technician, as well as a clinical laboratory technician in the state of Florida. Additionally, Ms. Sparks has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Massachusetts Society for Histotechnology and the department of pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Ms. Sparks began her vocation as a histologic technician at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital from 1979 to 1984, and garnered expertise as a forensic autopsy technician before advancing to the role of an assistant supervisor at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center from 1984 until 1991. Between 1991 and 2014, she was regularly promoted to leadership roles at several prominent medical institutions, including Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Quest Diagnostics, where she accomplished certification as a Six Sigma Green Belt completing two in-depth projects, Converge Diagnostics, Caris Life Science where she averaged 1800 biopsies daily, and AP Dermatology. Since 2014, Ms. Sparks has served as a histology instructor and a semiretired traveling independent pathology consultant. She has authored work that has appeared in medical publications.
An expert in histotechnology, Ms. Sparks was inspired to pursue her profession while serving as a phlebotomist for a pathologist who noticed her drive and potential, and ultimately encouraged her to specialize in her vocation. She has a passion for giving back to this field by instructing and consulting new upcoming technicians in the field. Long dedicated to civic advocacy, she volunteers with her local children's church and contributes extensively to missionary work. Looking toward the future, Ms. Sparks aspires to continue practicing her specialty and hopes to travel more for leisure.
