Prior to starting his four-decade career as a health and fitness educator, Dr. Abbott served honorably as a Captain in the U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets) and was a decorated Vietnam combat veteran. While in Special Forces in Central and South America, Cpt. Abbott worked with the Organization of American States (OAS) during the EI Salvador and Honduras conflict. He ran mobile training teams to Latin American countries teaching parachute packing, maintenance, aerial delivery, and High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) military freefall techniques. He commanded an Airborne School and was a member of an Army parachute demonstration team "The Jumping Ambassadors" that performed precision sky diving exhibitions. He also commanded an Underwater Operations and ParaScuba Rescue School that doubled as the Apollo Recovery Team for Central and South America, an assignment that later led to his working with the organization that helped develop the exercise program for NASA and the Apollo missions which in turn precipitated his career in health and fitness education. While advancing his career as an educator, Dr. Abbott remained as a commanding officer of a reserve Special Forces detachment that was both Underwater Operations and HALO qualified.
During the course of his academic education, Dr. Abbott earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology from Princeton University in 1962 and a Master of Science in Social Work (MSW) from Florida State University in 1974. He subsequently attained a Master of Science (MS) in Exercise Physiology from Florida International University in 1987 and a Doctor of Education (EdD) in the same field from Florida Atlantic University in 1989.
Dr. Abbott became the founder, president, and chief instructor for Fitness Institute International, Inc. while also serving as an Instructor Trainer with the American Heart Association for over 40 years. As a result of his dedication and contributions to the fitness industry, he was admitted as a fellow with both the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
As president of Fitness Institute, Dr. Abbott has consulted with law enforcement, fire service, the military, corporate business, and sport programs to include Olympic athletes, and has been a widely sought-after speaker both nationally and internationally. Fitness Institute conducts a 360-hour program for aspiring personal trainers by providing comprehensive academic instruction coupled with extensive hands-on, practical training. As a result of such instruction, the Institute's graduates are credentialed as Certified Personal Training Specialists (CPTS), a registered mark that has been recognized by lawyers as the most legally defensible personal trainer certificate in the fitness industry.
Due to his expertise as an educator in exercise physiology, his research on instructor/trainer standards, and his CPR/First Responder instructor qualifications, Dr. Abbott is frequently retained as an expert witness in fitness facility litigation cases in which individuals have been injured or have died.
