Dedicated to the betterment of his students, Mr. Barnett has served as a mathematics teacher for more than 20 years. Born in Port Antonio, Jamaica, he attended technical school to earn an associate degree and began working as a waiter in the hotel department for Cunard Cruise Line. After 20 years, he immigrated to the United States in 1990 to expand upon his education, and earned a Bachelor of Science in business from Medgar Evers College in 2000 and a Master of Science in elementary school mathematics from Brooklyn College in 2004. While pursuing his academic efforts, Mr. Barnett also worked as a senior citizen specialist for the Department of Aging, where he was bestowed with several certificates of thanks in honor of his legal work and crime prevention workshops.
Following his educational achievements, Mr. Barnett began working as a high school math teacher for the Department of Education in 2002. He taught for Middle School 267 for three years and for grades six through 12 at Frederick Douglas Academy for five years. Since 2020, he has served as a math teacher for the Bushwick Leaders High School for Academic Excellence. In this role, he is the main mathematics teacher for the school in algebra and geometry. As part of his dedication to the teaching profession, Mr. Barnett is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State.
Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Barnett serves on behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation, the National Association of Black Accountants and National Geographic Society and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Likewise, he is a charter member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture and participates in his Community Board 17 and 67th Precinct Council Meetings. In 2003, he was honored with an Exemplary Community Service Award from Assemblyman Nick Perry for his work in the community. Mr. Barnett also received a Certification of Appreciation for Dedicated Service from the Medgar Evers College Alumni Association Inc. in 2006 and 2007.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Barnett intends to continue helping others in his community as much as possible. His ultimate goal is to facilitate the success of his students and return to their community to help others, continuing the cycle of empowerment for years to come.
