An expert in clinical mental health counseling, Dr. Messina has served as a dedicated mental health professional and educator for more than 40 years. To prepare for his career, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in counseling psychology from the University at Buffalo in 1974 and completed a National Institute of Mental Health's Postdoctoral Fellowship in community mental health at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL.
Following these accomplishments, Dr. Messina began his career working at community mental health centers in Pensacola and Tampa, Florida and then in private practice for over 20 years in Tampa, Fl. He then moved on to work as a behavioral medicine consultant in nursing homes and hospitals. He is a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Florida. In 2010, he transitioned into academia as a full-time lecturer until he retired in 2021. In this capacity, Dr. Messina trained clinicians to become diagnosticians and interventionists and taught subjects regarding clinical problem solving and treatment planning.
Dr. Messina has served as the webmaster for Coping.us since 1999. Working diligently to manage the website, he additionally writes reading materials to serve as its content. Dr. Messina works to ensure that his professional successes do not overshadow his authentically lived experience as a person, allowing himself to stand as a more relatable and empathetic presence on behalf of his clients.
As part of his career, Dr. Messina has also authored and co-authored numerous works for his "Tools for Coping" series, including, "Growing Down: Tools for Healing the Inner Child," "Tools for Handling Control Issues," "The Self-Esteem Seekers Anonymous: The Sea's Program Manual" and "Laying the Foundation: The Roots of Low Self-Esteem." In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Messina was named as the Florida Mental Health Counselor Educator of the Year in 2017.
Dr. Messina in 1976 was the co-founder of the American Mental Health Counselors Association and served as the second president of the organization. He is a lifetime member of the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, he was co-founder for the non-profit. Dr. Messina was also named in 2013 the Salvation Army Volunteer of the Year in honor of his inexhaustible efforts on behalf of homeless.
Dr. Messina moved to Rochester, MN after retiring in November 2021 and is now volunteering at Mayo Clinic. Having been a patient at the clinic himself under their cardiac rehabilitation program, his goal is to give back to the Mayo Clinic for their wonderful care during his major health crisis.
