While working as a direct support specialist at TURN Community Services from 2011 to 2014, Ms. Daniels embarked on a humanitarian venture to help the homeless in her community. She initiated the cause after a personal experience provided her with direct insights into the immense need that existed on the streets of Salt Lake City. Determined to become a positive agent of change, Ms. Daniels worked for the next eight years collecting and transferring usable donated goods, like household items, tools and clothes, into the hands of those who needed them most, especially during the brutal winter months. She estimates that she and other volunteers often assisted up to 750 people per week.
Once Ms. Daniels' storage units and personal space at home could no longer accommodate the public's donations, she initiated a nonprofit organization, and the thrift shop Lillies of the Fields was a natural extension. Opened for business in 2015, Lillies of the Fields immediately thrived, and her store soon required a move from 500 to 3,000 square feet of operating space. Moreover, Ms. Daniels managed to keep the shop open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
To date, Ms. Daniels has donated 63,477 pounds of clothes. In recognition of her generosity, outreach efforts, and business success, she has been recognized as a three-time nominee for the Best of Salt Lake award. Looking toward the future, Ms. Daniels expects to transfer her now-expanded thrift shop to a like-minded owner, and she will contribute her expertise to a smooth transition.
