For more than 45 years, Dr. Lutas has distinguished herself as a physician and educator specializing in cardiology and internal medicine. Presently, she serves as an attending physician of internal medicine at Sun River Health Care at a clinic in Jamaica, Queens in New York City, providing patient care to the indigent and homeless population. A non-profit, independent health care organization, Sun River Health Care is devoted to helping the less fortunate members of the community receive the best possible care in all areas of medicine, including adult and pediatrics, women's health, behavioral health, and dental care.
Dr. Lutas began her career teaching medicine at New York University (NYU) School of Medicine in 1977. Recruited by Cornell University in 1981, she was promoted from an instructor of medicine to an assistant professor of medicine between 1982 and 1988. Dr. Lutas subsequently excelled as an attending physician at Saint Vincent's Hospital Community Medicine Program, working to provide health care in homeless shelters directly from 1988 to 2011.
Dr. Lutas has contributed to numerous manuscripts, abstracts, peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and book chapters in her area of expertise. Moreover, she had conducted workshops and a lecture series at area hospitals and institutions, in which she spoke about echocardiography, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, HIV and AIDS, and HIV and homelessness, among other subjects. Dr. Lutas' research and teaching spanned two years – the remainder of her career has been caring for the homeless and the poor.
As part of her established commitment to civic endeavors, Dr. Lutas has devoted more than 49 years to teaching catechism classes at her home church to students preparing to make the sacraments of holy communion and confirmation. She has also taught various religious courses as a parishioner at her church for the past 50 years. She is presently a trustee for the Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens, New York, and remains affiliated with the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Among her additional endeavors, Dr. Lutas frequently supports various educational and nonprofit organizations, including Catholic Relief Services, St. Joseph's Indian School, Operation Smile, Boys Town, and numerous catholic mission organizations, and has a strong faith in God.
Dr. Lutas was a First Responder on 9/11, going down after the first building fell and being there when the second building fell. When the main and initial staging hospital was set up, she was in charge of the triage unit and later both the triage and medical unit, seeing all those who were brought there for care.
Dr. Lutas graduated from Long Island City High School as valedictorian of her senior class in 1968. She subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, and a Doctor of Medicine, with honors, as first in her medical class at NYU in 1972 and 1976, respectively. Additional educational pursuits to her credit include an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at NYU Medical Center between 1976 and 1981, followed by a fellowship in cardiology at New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center between 1981 and 1982. Dr. Lutas likewise received her board certification in internal medicine and received certification in cardiovascular disease through the American Board of Internal Medicine.
In recognition of her dedication to the field, Dr. Lutas was acknowledged as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians. She is also a member of the American Heart Association, the Council on Clinical Cardiology, and the American Federation for Clinical Research, as well as Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Delta Phi. Furthermore, Dr. Lutas was an NYU scholar, New York State Board of Regents scholar, and Four Oaks Foundation scholar.
In honor of her achievements, Dr. Lutas received the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Award from NYU School of Medicine in 1976 for graduating first in her class. She also accepted a CARE Award for Philanthropy in 1998 and Papal Honors in 2020. After Catholic Charities named the Dr. Elizabeth Lutas Center in her honor in 2014, Dr. Lutas was celebrated at the 2017 annual fundraiser dinner which raised millions of dollars for the organization.
