Born in Poland, Dr. Wojciechowski obtained a veterinary surgeon degree at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences in 1961. He subsequently excelled as a research fellow for the aforementioned university's faculty of veterinary medicine before earning a Doctor of Veterinary Science with a concentration in microbiology in 1967. While completing his graduate studies, Dr. Wojcechowski began his professional career at Polfa Warszawa S.A., where he worked as a microbiologist and mycologist in relation to the production and fermentation of antibiotics.
From 1967 until 1977, Dr. Wojciechowski thrived as the head of the virology section within Warsaw's Laboratory of Veterinary Hygiene. During this period, he also earned a Doctor of Science at the National Veterinary Research Institute in Pulawy, Poland and served as an advisor for the veterinary department of Poland's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Dr. Wojciechowski was additionally recruited as a docent and associate professor at the Laboratory of Veterinary Hygiene from 1974 until 1984.
Throughout the following two decades, Dr. Wocjiechowski flourished as an animal health officer for the virology department of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). After spearheading a number of critical projects at the FAO office in Kabul, Afghanistan, he was appointed to the virology division of the FAO's official headquarters in Rome where he directly contributed to the eradication of African swine fever in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Dr. Wocjiechowski's division also helped eradicate rinderpest in Southern and Western Asia and collaborated with the World Health Organization to significantly inhibit the spread of rabies.
Alongside his primary professional responsibilities, Dr. Wocjiechowski has contributed articles and reports to a myriad of professional journals and given presentations at more than 15 international conferences and seminars. From 1996 until 2007, he found further success as the co-founder of CENTAUR, which is a veterinary biotechnology and epidemiology network for Central and Eastern Europe within the FAO. Dr. Wocjiechowski currently maintains active affiliations with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Microbiology and the Polish Society of Veterinary Science.
In recognition of his involvement in the establishment of the Pan African Veterinary Vaccine Centre, Dr. Wocjiechowski received an honorary diploma in 2003 as well as a certificate of appreciation from the Ethiopia-based organization, AU-PANVAC, in 2006. He has also been honored with prestigious accolades from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences and Poland's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In 2001, Cornell University distinguished Dr. Wocjiechowski as the George C. Poppensiek visiting professor in international veterinary medicine.
Since 2000, Dr. Wocjiechowski has served as a freelance international consultant on viral disease control and animal health. He is extremely proud of his vast tenure with the United Nations along with the modesty and respect he continuously showed to his former colleagues. In his spare time, Dr. Wocjiechowski enjoys reading, skiing, listening to jazz music and philosophy. He harbors a particular interest in humanism and has written four books on this particular philosophical stance.
