Dr. Lyons-Lawrence appreciates making a difference in each student's life, especially for minority students who may not otherwise have academic support.
Dr. Lyons-Lawrence started her career attaining an Associate of Science degree in medical technology from Dyke College, Cleveland, OH. From there Dr. Lyons-Lawrence earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Akron. Following receiving the Bachelor of Science Degree, she began her professional journey as a high school business education teacher at John R. Buchtel High School from 1971 to 1980. Also during this time, she served as a lecturer at the University of Akron between 1978 and 1980. Along with teaching high school and as a lecturer Dr. Lyons-Lawrence earned a Master of Science in Business Education from Kent State University. After receiving a Master's Degree, she accepted a position at Ohio University as an assistant professor, where she also consulted on behalf of the University's Instructional Materials Laboratory.
To advance her expertise, Dr. Lyons-Lawrence earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Instructional Technology, Labor and Human Resources and Management Information Systems at Ohio State University in 1983. While pursuing her degree, she worked as a graduate teaching assistant for Ohio State University until her graduation. Dr. Lyons-Lawrence subsequently accepted a position as Associate Professor for California State University Fresno in the College of Business from 1983 until 1987.
A noteworthy fact about Dr. Lyons-Lawrence: she is the first African American female to be tenured in a Colleges of Business at Universities.
In 1987 she accepted a position at San Diego State University in the College of Business earning tenure in 1988. She taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Business Communication and Management Information Systems.
During her tenure at San Diego State University, she also served as Director of the College of Business Faculty/Student Mentor Program beginning in 1988. Additionally, in 1995, she served as Consultant Project Director for Management Information Systems and Maternal Child Health for the State of California Maternal Child Health Black Infant Health (BIH) Project at San Diego State University.

She published two books in 2015 with High Pointe Productivity, "For Women Who: Work Too Hard & Do Too Much - Learn to Delegate: Increase Professional Productivity and Reduce Stress" and "5-Easy Steps for Effective Delegation: The Guide for Business Owners, Managers, Supervisors, Teachers and Trainers." In addition, she developed two successful businesses in California and Georgia.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Lyons-Lawrence plans to continue writing and self-publishing. She is continuing her career as an author, course developer, trainer, consultant and speaker providing Business Communication Continuing Education and Training for Small Business Owners and their staff to refresh, re-tool and/or re-invent. She is also developing courses for women 55+ years to help them develop their skills in entrepreneurship.
Outside of her professional commitments, Dr. Lyons-Lawrence is caregiver for her husband, who survived a hemorrhagic stroke. With the experience of caregiving, she is writing a book on surviving caregiving and prioritizing self-care to support others going through the experience.
