Recognized as an adaptive fitness training and inclusive special needs gym, he opened his doors to the public at their Dickinson, Texas location in 2021. Serving the southeast section of Houston, Mr. Lutey and his team instruct children, teens, and adults with various mental, physical, and other challenges such as Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury.
Serving a niche market as one of the few of its kind dedicated to individuals with mental, physical, and cognitive challenges, Mr. Lutey and his team of trainers teach clientele how to safely and properly exercise. Offering private and virtual personal training, as well as group classes such as kickboxing and boot camp, Special Strong also doubles as an outlet for children who lack in social interaction. Notably, Mr. Lutey and his gym were recently featured in an article by the Houston Chronicle on June 28, 2021.
Witnessing incredible progress from these children day after day, one of Mr. Lutey's greatest achievements has been watching the progress of a client, Henry, who was the victim of a hit and run. Now wheelchair bound and suffering from brain trauma, which affects his memory, speech, and mobility, Henry's physical and emotional health have increased exponentially, and he is more confident and hopeful about the future.
Mr. Lutey was inspired to represent Special Strong because of his own experiences with his sister, who was born with Down syndrome. Consequently, his mother became very active with special needs children while he was growing up, which helped his learn how to be a compassionate, accepting, and caring big brother. Mr. Lutey is proud to continue to pay it forward through his business. Likewise, he has become a frequent speaker and supporter of the Gulf Coast Self-Advocates Group and volunteers his time with Big Feast. In support of his business, he is an active member of the League City Chamber of Commerce.
Prior to his current work, Mr. Lutey worked in sales as vice president of Office Furniture Connection for five years between 2015 and 2020. He also worked in the hospitality industry as the Houston market manager for Vmeal from 2006 to 2013, having also lent his expertise in retail as a district manager for Abercrombie & Fitch from 1999 to 2003.
An alumnus of the University of Montana, Mr. Lutey received a Bachelor of Science in business administration, finance, and management in 1999, followed by the completion of an internship in finance at Walt Disney World in 1999. He holds certifications as an adaptive special needs trainer level I and II, adaptive special needs master trainer, adaptive special needs group fitness instructor, adaptive special needs nutrition coach, and adaptive special needs life skills instructor. He is also a certified International Sports Conditioning Association personal trainer and will soon complete his personal trainer certification through the National Federation of Professional Trainers.
