Dr. Kula served as the graduate director and clinical chemistry course chairperson for the University of Maryland Medical School's Department of Medical and Research Technology.
TERRE HAUTE, IN, June 21, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Theodore John Kula Jr., PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. A celebrated member of his field, Dr. Kula served as the graduate director and clinical chemistry course chairperson for the University of Maryland Medical School's Department of Medical and Research Technology where he initiated their clinical trials program. He successfully acquired grants to install a student computer lab and to produce instructional programs for Clinical Chemistry. He was also a coinvestigator on an NIH grant to evaluate fluoride slow release devices. He went on to serve the University of North Carolina's Chapel Hill Dental School as computer consultant, multimedia developer and researcher. Following a research associateship at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he developed computerized interactive educational programs at the Indiana University School of Dentistry.
Having notably earned a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology/minor biochemistry with research in bioenergetics, Dr. Kula pursued a professional path punctuated with accomplishment. He developed innovative clinical chemistry and orthodontic educational programs winning national prizes in both. Dr. Kula's endeavors were also enriched by a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science, earned from the University of Dayton Biology Department.
Dr. Kula impressively worked on postdoctoral research with Britton Chance, David Wilson, and Ted Kuwana and published numerous research articles, particularly with his colleague and wife, Katherine. Throughout the course of his career, he maintained his involvement with organizations relevant to his field, such as the American Society for Clinical Laboratories, American Society of Clinical Chemistry, American Society for Microbiology and American Society for Clinical Pathology. Dr. Kula was bestowed with a variety of accolades, including a Student Council Teaching Award from the University of Maryland at Baltimore in 1988, an Outstanding Speaker Award and Best Abstract Award from the American Association of Clinical Chemistry in 1995 and 1996, respectively, and First Place in the World Wide Web Category 2002 Educational Computing in Dentistry Competition by the American Dental Education Association. He was also inducted into the honor societies of Beta Beta Beta and Scabbard and Blade during the 1960s.
Following a life spent in service to the field of education, Dr. Kula passed away on November 24, 2020. He is survived by his wife and colleague, Dr. Katherine Kula, as well as their two children.
