A renowned cardiologist, Dr. Leet concluded his career with Prince William Medical Center as the chief of cardiology and chief of intensive care in 2012. Affiliated with the hospital for 35 years, he notably established and directed the cardiac rehabilitation program and served as the medical director of cardiology from 1977 to 1999. Previously, Dr. Leet saw patients at the Prince William Medical Center, Novant Health UVA Health System, and founded Prince William Cardiology Associates, a solo practice in Manassas, Virginia, that he maintained for 35 years.
During his career at Prince William Medical Center, Dr. Leet began implementing a cardiac program that included alternative methods of treating patients. As opposed to relying solely on conventional methods, his program was comprised of meditation, self-hypnosis, breathing techniques and other practices. Dr. Leet's decision to change his approach followed a heart attack he suffered at the age of 51, which bestowed him with a new perspective as a patient. The Washington Post later featured an article regarding his experience and the use of mind-body therapy to treat various conditions. He was also included in an episode of HealthWatch on the PBS television station.
A prominent figure in the health care community, Dr. Leet has lectured numerous times at Prince William Hospital, Fauquier Hospital, and Saint Francis Hospital in Budapest on the treatment and prevention of heart disease. He also assisted in creating a cardiovascular program at a hospital in Budapest alongside several local doctors and nurses, as well as the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development. Furthermore, Dr. Leet was responsible for establishing the first thrombolytic program in Northern Virginia for the treatment of myocardial infarction.
As a result of his years of research, Dr. Leet has contributed numerous professional articles on heart disease prevention. He also produced a CD in 2004 regarding various meditation techniques for patients. On behalf of his local community, Dr. Leet spent over a decade volunteering his time at a Manassas Free clinic that was founded by his wife. He has also served on the board of directors for the Manassas Ballet Company and as a committee board member for the Hilton Performing Arts Center at his alma mater, George Mason University.
To achieve his professional goals, Dr. Leet received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, with a minor in biology, at George Washington University in 1968, followed by a Doctor of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in 1972. He subsequently completed a residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at George Washington University in 1977. Dr. Leet is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiology and has been recognized as the first medical doctor to become certified in cardiology in Prince William County, Virginia.
Dr. Leet has been recognized by his peers as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He has also been a past president of the local chapter of the American Heart Association. Honoring his expertise as a cardiologist, Dr. Leet was recognized as a Top Doctor in the Washingtonian Magazine for 12 consecutive years.
