Ms. Nichols found much success throughout her career in elementary and special education for 35 incredible years. Retiring from Boulder Valley School District in Boulder, Colorado in 2005, Ms. Nichols taught special education, Kindergarten and second grade students. Ms. Nichols also held faculty appointments at Saint Vrain Public Schools in Longmont, Colorado, Jefferson County Schools in Lakewood, Colorado, and Ouray Public Schools in Ouray, Colorado, beginning in 1971. Later in her career, Ms. Nichols taught at the Rocky Mountain School for the Gifted and Creative in Boulder, Colorado.
During her teaching years, she was nominated for the Governor's Excellence in Education Award and the Disney's Teacher of the Year Award. Additionally, she was presented with a Math Education Grant in 1995, a Reading Comprehension Grant in 2002 and a Map Making Grant in 2003 from the Foundation of Boulder Valley Schools. Ms. Nichols enjoyed the privilege of being selected to present ways of teaching reading acquisition to special needs children through Regis University and other universities and organizations.
Gaining further recognition in the education sector, Ms. Nichols was active for many years tutoring students privately. In fact, she was once hired to tutor for a family while they traveled around the world for three months. During their travels, Ms. Nichols also had the opportunity to volunteer in Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa and Thailand.
Ms. Nichols also was a Childbirth and Parenting Educator at Boulder Community Hospital and other organizations for 28 years and has had attended some 65 births during her career. When teaching second grade, several of the children in her class were those whose births she had attended.
Inspired by her sister, who worked in health care as a nurse and childbirth educator, she was incredibly grateful to prepare new individuals and couples childbirth techniques, newborn care and breastfeeding. She has volunteered her time with Visiting Angels Foundation, a national non-profit that serves as one of the country's largest providers of in-home senior care services. Ms. Nichols has also contributed to Head Start in Boulder, a government program that provides various services to low-income children and families.
Ms. Nichols prepared for her career by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Northern Colorado in 1971 and a Master of Arts in special education at the University of Northern Colorado in 1973. She has been a certified doula as well as a prenatal parenting instructor. Moreover, Ms. Nichols has been licensed as a childbirth educator through Lamaze International.
During her career, a celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Nichols has been cited in the 72nd edition of Who's Who in America. She was presented with a Math Education Grant in 1995, a Reading Comprehension Grant in 2002 and a Map Making Grant in 2003 from the Foundation of Boulder Valley Schools.
