Looking toward the future, Ms. Sisco-Smith aims to continue expansion of the NCAAWA's Global Mentoring Program for girls of color.
OCEANSIDE, CA, June 27, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alma Sisco-Smith has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Originally intent on specializing in the field of medicine, Ms. Sisco-Smith began her studies in immunology at Northeastern University. Upon graduating, her interests broadened, which led her to receive a Master of Arts in health sciences education and administration from San Francisco State University and the University of California San Francisco. Following this accomplishment, Ms. Sisco-Smith pursued doctoral studies in higher education administration and policy from the University of California Berkeley.
During the early stages of her career, Ms. Sisco-Smith helped establish a hospital teaching affiliation program in clinical laboratory medicine with Northeastern University, and eventually joined the faculty staff. Due to her dedication to students, she earned the Omicron Sigma Outstanding Educator Award on two separate occasions. Over the years, she has also gained valuable expertise in the field of grant writing for the public and nonprofit community sectors, lectured on the topics of leadership and upward mobility for women, and worked as an associate director for administration of extended degree programs at California State University, Long Beach. Likewise, Ms. Sisco-Smith distinguished herself as an associate dean for lifelong learning at the University of the Redlands.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Sisco-Smith has achieved much. She co-chaired the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Women and Sexual Harassment at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), established the office of Sexual Harassment Prevention and Resolution, receiving the Chancellor's Award for the Advancement of Women, and in 1993 updated the UCSF policy to address same gender sexual harassment – three years ahead of the Supreme Court. In addition to becoming certified in mediation and conflict management, she was selected for the U.S. People-to-People Ambassador Program in 2000 to meet with the Human Rights and Reconciliation Committee in South Africa and used that experience when chair to an executive appointed Committee on Institutional Climate at UCSF. More than 20 years after starting in the field, Ms. Sisco-Smith retired from her role as an academic administrator for the University of California.
Since retirement, Ms. Sisco-Smith has contributed as a member of the board of trustees for the Oceanside Public Library, and as a board member with the North County African American Women's Association (NCAAWA). In recognition of her body of work, she received a Volunteer Service Award through UCSF, an Exceptional University Service Award, a United States President Bronze Award for Community Volunteerism, a Distinguished Woman of the Year Award through the NAACP and the City of Oceanside Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award. While her career has been filled with standout moments, she is most proud of her work to empower young girls of color as global citizens and global ambassadors mentoring programs with leadership skills, financial literacy and social and global issues that impact social and career mobility.
