An expert in communications systems engineering, Dr. Pettit has distinguished himself as an electrical engineer and educator for more than 60 years. Early in his private career, he served honorably in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. During that time, he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Pettit studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1954 and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1960. While pursuing his education, he worked as an engineer for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation from 1954 to 1959 and later found success as a Design Specialist for The Martin Company from 1960 to 1963. He subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy (Electrical Engineering) from the University of Florida in 1964.
During the course of his studies at the University of Florida, Dr. Pettit benefited greatly from the mentorship of Dr. Theodore S. George, who later became his doctoral advisor. Following his studies at the University of Florida, Dr. Pettit joined the Lockheed-Georgia Company in 1964 as a Scientist. He later continued his career as an Associate Professor for the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1966, where he would advance to become a full Professor of Electrical Engineering. Continuing his career efforts, he joined the faculty at California State University, Northridge in 1978 as a Professor of Electrical Engineering, and became the head of his department in 1983. In 2003 he was bestowed with the distinguished title of Professor Emeritus.
As part of his primary career efforts, Dr. Pettit contributed to the engineering development of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and tactical and strategic military communications systems which became the basis for modern cell phones. He holds two patents for satellite and submarine communications. He is a Senior Member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Over the course of his professional journey, Dr. Pettit has published many technical and scientific papers and reports. In 1982 he authored the reference book "ECM and ECCM Techniques for Digital Communications Systems," which currently is in over one hundred libraries throughout the world. He has developed and presented numerous engineering short courses in dozens of locations in the United States and many other countries. In 2004 he wrote a memoir "Mill-Village Boy" and in 2022 a greatly expanded version "The Amazing Adventures of the Mill-Village Boy."
