A two-time national boxing champion, Mr. Jumawan utilizes his skill to train other potential and current athletes in boxing. To prepare for his professional journey, he earned a Bachelor of Science in health and physical education from the University of Hawaii in 1980. While pursuing his education, he contributed as a member of Team USA from 1977 to 1980. Following his graduation, he became the Hawaii chief of officials for USA Boxing Inc. from 1985 to 2011. Additionally, Mr. Jumawan functioned as the chief of officials for Amateur Boxing of Hawaii until 2016. He also worked as a sales agent for New York Life Insurance Co. between 1984 and 2009.
Having embarked upon his athletic career at the age of nine, Mr. Jumawan came of age in recreation centers and at the gym. His amateur boxing record over 14 years for 169 bouts included 153 wins. Notably, he is the six-time Hawaii state boxing champion and a five-time Hawaii Golden Gloves champion, having held the title between 1975 and 1980.
Throughout the course of his service in other positions, Mr. Jumawan began as the president, owner and coach of the Pearlside Boxing Gym in 1997 to help burgeoning young boxers attain grants and donations to support their goals. His expertise resides in instructing children in fitness and boxing, as well as providing classes for people with Parkinson's disease to help them cope with their condition. Over the course of his career, Mr. Jumawan has also served as a referee and judge for amateur and professional boxing. Currently he is the only Silver Level Coach in Hawaii and he is a Bronze Coach Clinician who travels the country teaching "Bronze Level Clinics" for USA Boxing.
Due to his work with a diverse range of people, Mr. Jumawan has long been dedicated not only to improving himself, but those under his tutelage as well. In accounting for his success, he credits his ability to serve as an effective and capable leader, as well as an inspiring role model.
