Her interest in music was piqued at just five years old, after which she went on to study various forms of classical music, concentrating on American and contemporary genres. Ms. Mills obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College prior to earning a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1959.

A renowned pianist, Ms. Mills has been invited to perform at universities and festivals. Moreover, she has performed solo recitals at esteemed venues including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Merkin Concert Hall, Alice Tully Hall and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York. Her repertoire, spanning the 18th to the 21st centuries, includes traditional European music alongside newer American works, many of them by women composers. During an earlier stage of her career, Ms. Mills worked as the manager of the Third St. Music School concert series and as a piano teacher.

Ms. Mills has earned much recognition for her talent, such as having all of her papers included in the archives at the New York Library at Lincoln Center. Additionally, she has been the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition to maintaining her memberships with the International Alliance for Women in Music and the Schubert Club, she acts as a board member for the Bar Harbor Music Festival.
