Prior to embarking on his professional journey, he pursued an education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1961. He continued his academic efforts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1966. Subsequently, he completed his postdoctoral training in neuroscience at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Washington School of Medicine.
As a commitment to his field, Dr. Fetz has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Society of Neuroscience, the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Neuroscience, the International Brain Research Organization and the Neurosciences Research Program.
Proudly serving by his motto: "it's all done with neurons," Dr. Fetz began his vocation in his specialty as an assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine from 1969 to 1975, where he went on to work as an associate professor between 1975 and 1980. Since 1980, he has built a prolific career as a professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington, while concurrently serving as an adjunct professor in the Department of Bioengineering and a Core Staff member in the Washington National Primate Research Center. Additionally, he has served as a professor of Digital Arts and Experimental Media at the University of Washington since 2019. In this capacity, Dr. Fetz has been responsible for managing a research lab and teaching neuroscience and DXARTs classes.
In his career-related endeavors, Dr. Fetz has authored or co-authored over 175 research papers, created cyanotype and digital print collages, served on multiple editorial boards and presented at numerous international symposia. Well regarded for his contributions to the field, he has received multiple awards, including the United States and Japan National Science Foundation Cooperative Science Program Award, the Josiah Macy Faculty Scholar Award, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Teacher-Investigator Award, a Fellowship at the Wissenschftskolleg zu Berlin, and the Humboldt Research Award, among others.
