FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, July 05, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James Newman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
At the age of 12, having been told by his parents they would not be able to send him to college, Mr. Newman already was working to put away money for his college education by baby-sitting, helping neighbors remove coal ashes from their furnaces, washing windows and cutting neighborhood lawns. By the time he was 15 he was painting houses in his neighborhood, working with professional landscapers, and designing and planting both vegetable and flower gardens at his home in Malden, Massachusetts. He also played saxophone and sang and had started his own small dance band in high school that continued through college.
He already was on track to become one of the Midwest's most experienced energy efficiency and green building experts. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University, Medford, MA, he moved to Detroit, MI. There he began his career in technical sales for heating, ventilating and cooling systems at Westinghouse Electric Corporation. While working he took courses toward an MBA at Wayne State University and the University of Detroit Mercy. His next career position was as Air Conditioning Product Manager for Chas A. Strand Company in Detroit, a manufacturer of large, heavy-duty industrial heating and ventilating systems. He was responsible for a new division that designed and built air conditioning systems, including the marketing and service departments.
When he left Strand Company in 1972, the division he had begun from scratch had sales of more than $34,000,000 in 2022 dollars. He then co-founded Thermal-Netics, Inc., a manufacturer's representative company that sold indoor environmental control systems and energy conservation systems. By the time he sold the company in 2003, Thermal-Netics was achieving $47,000,000 in revenue in 2022 dollars. Over the years, Mr. Newman also honed his expertise in the field as a founding member of the Detroit Regional Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, and as chair of the Sustainability Committee for the Detroit chapter of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA). In addition, he is an active member of ASHRAE, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Technology and Research Council and the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (AIA-COTE).
Known as the "Dean of Green," Mr. Newman presently excels as a distinguished lecturer for ASHRAE (formerly known as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers). Through ASHRAE and other organizations he speaks internationally on a wide range of topics, including green building technology, energy conservation, indoor air quality and sustainability. Driven to help secure a healthier future for the planet, he also founded Newman Consulting Group in 2002. As managing partner, Mr. Newman helps clients acquire funding for their energy-conserving projects, assists commercial, institutional and industrial building owners to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and provides a wide range of services, including energy audits, re-commissioning and retro-commissioning of buildings, engineering reports and more.
Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Newman has expanded upon his industry knowledge by becoming a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), LEED Accredited Professional for Building Design + Construction (LEED AP BD+C), an Operations and Performance Management Professional (OPMP), a Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), and a Certified Sustainable Development Professional (CSDP). To remain aware of ongoing changes in the field, he is active in a number of professional organizations, some mentioned above.
He has received many awards including Distinguished Service and Lifetime Achievement. While his career has been filled with standout moments, he is most proud of becoming a Fellow of the Engineering Society of Detroit and ASHRAE. He also has worked with architects to help them design more energy-efficient homes for Habitat for Humanity. Outside of his work, Mr. Newman devotes himself to mentoring younger people in the HVAC industry as well as being involved in environmental organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, the Environmental Defense Fund, Earthjustice, the World Wildlife Fund and the Sierra Club.
While numerous factors have contributed to his success, Mr. Newman is most grateful for the influence of his parents, as well as his elementary, middle and high school teachers. Aside from his personal accomplishments, he is the proud husband of Lynn E. Newman, a well-known artist and art therapist, father of Valerie R. Newman, an internationally acclaimed criminal appeals attorney, Stuart Newman, a successful entrepreneur, and stepfather to Elaina Greenberg, an outstanding acupuncturist and Chinese holistic medicine practitioner. Looking toward the future, Mr. Newman aims to continue his work in consulting and remain one of the leaders in the industry.
